ietf-prototypeagenda.pngDo you believe that both the SIP and XMPP protocols should be able to work well together? Do you want to make it easier for a client app to use both protocols? (And for it to be easy for the user?)

If so, there’s a new IETF mailing list formed called SIXPAC, a.k.a. “SIXPAC (SIP Interworking with XMPP in Presence Aware Clients)” and the mailing list to join is found here:

https://www.ietf.org/mailman/listinfo/sixpac

As you can see from the list archive, the group has literally just started up as a result of meetings out at the IETF 79 event happening this week in Beijing, China. Peter St. Andre sent out a draft of a charter for a working group that includes this problem statement:

Both the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) are widely deployed technologies for real-time communication over the Internet. In order to offer a complete suite of features as well as communication across multiple networks, several user-oriented software applications support both SIP and XMPP, and more software developers have expressed interest in building such “dual-stack” solutions. Unfortunately, it is difficult to provide a good end-user experience in such applications because SIP and XMPP are not “aware” of each other.

The end goal is to make it easier for developers to create apps that work with both SIP and XMPP – which will ultimately lead to a better user experience and a great real-time communications capability based on open standards.

Here at Voxeo, we’re big fans of both SIP and XMPP and use them both in a number of our products and services including Phono, Tropo, IMified and our Prism product. I’ve signed up to the SIXPAC mailing list and I know a number of other Voxeons have (or will), too. It will take some time to develop the proposals and then make them happen… but it’s definitely a necessary activity. If you’re interested in this work, please do join the mailing list and join in the conversation!
