Want a great tutorial on IPv6? Want to understand how to deploy IPv6 securely? And how IPv6 differs from IPv4 with regard to security?

Last month the US National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) released an excellent “Special Publications” document titled “Guidelines for the Secure Deployment of IPv6” (SP 800-119). While designed to provide guidance to federal agencies, the document is available for free download to anyone at:

http://csrc.nist.gov/publications/nistpubs/800-119/sp800-119.pdf

Like many NIST documents, it actually goes beyond the stated “guidelines” to also provide a solid tutorial in the topic, in this case IPv6. The major sections are:

  1. Introduction
  2. Introduction to IPv6
  3. IPv6 Overview
  4. IPv6 Advanced Topics
  5. IPv6 Security Advanced Topics
  6. IPv6 Deployment

It’s 188 pages long including the appendices and well worth a read if you are interested in IPv6 in general and security in particular. Even if you aren’t as concerned about the security, it’s still worthwhile to check out. Kudos to NIST for coming out with a document like this.
